As an action movie with reasonable performances, decent set pieces and efficient plot, this is a pretty enjoyable romp, but it's quite a waste of the Sherlock franchise.
It probably doesn't help having the recent BBC series showing how it should be done, but even before that, it was clear that this was more akin to Young Sherlock Holmes than the classic stories.
There are nods to detective work and deduction, but mostly this film is about punching and slapstick. It's fun while it lasts, and does pave the way nicely for a hopefully superior sequel, but this is still at best an average movie.
utterly dire portrayal of one of the best known duo's in english literature, since when did holmes fight like bourne or watson creep upon a baddie and do him over with a strangehold?.
nevertheless a fairly good film just try to ignore the sherlock tie in
Glad to see Guy Richie back on form after a few years of mediocre films (with the exception of Swept Away...That was truly awful) and see him pull off what I think is the most entertaining film so far this year...Admittedly it is only April but this really is a good dollop of pure entertainment and urge you to see this as Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are excellent , as is the brilliant Mark Strong...A definate purchase !!!!
When i first heard about this Guy Ritchie version of Sherlock Holmes i was slightly worried after some of his more recent films left a bit to be desired.
Robert Downey Jr was great as Holmes and Jude Law who i am not normally a fan of is also very good as Watson. This film is a different take on a normal Sherlock Holmes adventure Holmes and Watson are very much more hands on with some brilliant fight scenes throughout the film and the film is a lot more gritty and dark than most other Sherlock Holmes films i have seen in the past.
The story is very well written and Guy Ritchie does a great job with the actors and gets the best out of them throughout the film.
I was very suprised with this film i thought i would not really like it after a few friends slated it and it being different to other Holmes films but i thought it was very good and im looking forward to the release on DVD and hopefully to the sequel after the addition of Holmes nemesis Morriaty.
WOW---what a fantastic film---
---my partner and i went to see this at the pictures and it was fantastic!!very dark because of the time it was placed but what a cast...Law and Downey Jnr really bounce off each other.
Well done Mr Ritchie----not liked much of your other stuff but this one was superb.
Look forward to the sequel..;-)
am certainly in the queue for a copy of this....!!!
